Dust flies in my face as I dig in dirt which might as well be concrete; sweat pours down my forehead, cementing the dust to my skin. It’s funny to think after I’m done, the dirt becomes as moist and malleable as a delicious angel food cake. I stare at our objective, an innocuous white pipe barely sticking up out of the ground a couple of feet away. I glue several pieces of PVC pipe together to connect and complete our water lines. I screw on black sprinkler heads at the ends of the pipe and shove the dirt back where I found it. It doesn’t quite fit the way it used to. I stand back with screwdrivers in my hands as the first water shoots up from the heads; I’m ready to pounce upon them to protect a driveway, or house, or car from receiving the water which belongs on the grass. When I’m done, it will appear as if I’ve have barely done anything but the results will become evident beyond the homeowner’s wildest dreams. I destroy the grass in order to turn it green. I bring water to many lawns screaming for a drink in the dreadfully hot summer sun but it’s not so simple as digging and laying pipe. I crawl on my hands and knees to widen the trench with my hand shovel just so the PVC will fit free from the danger of aerators. My hands rise from the ground covered with a myriad of scrapes and cuts. I bring the PVC into the trench and eye the distance to the next piece, already pulled by our trencher. There’s barely enough pipe to make it. I can’t do it alone, but two people can persevere. I call my coworker over and we force the two pieces together. It might not hold; the anticipation is the worst part. It does though and I let out a sigh of relief. I laugh at the pipe glue burning like acid into a fresh cut on my hand. After the trench is covered over I rest in the cool shade. It’s humbling to, know my academic achievements do me no good where real skills are required and real work is needed. The only thing I can think of truly needing is a simple drink of water. Luckily I brought some generously cold water with me, the well water we’re working with is not suitable for drinking. I remember this later as I’m pummeled with water from all sides when I’m trying to bring my handiwork under control.

A little later I watch as my father instructs the homeowners on the ways to adjust and control the system. Their faces illuminate with joy as they see the water sprays glow orange in the waning light of the day. My face morphs into a grin as I think of all of the work it took to make this possible. It feels like forever but its only been a day. I rub the dirt off my face a little and stare down at my dripping wet clothes; sure I’m tired and dirty, but seeing the system run is satisfying enough to wash all of the day’s annoyances away. I don’t have to do this but I can’t really stay away. Maybe I get a little wiser with each system I do. Maybe my time in the here and now is stress relief and distracts my mind from wandering off somewhere to the future or the past. I’m not sure which but nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing hard work pay off and knowing others are just as satisfied with my work. We passed the trials and emerged stronger and victorious from our brief battle with the heat and the earth. The water is moved where we want it but we have to create its path; I have realized my life is like the water.
